The LifeWrap is a full-body tourniquet that helps to slow blood loss, contract the uterus, and direct blood towards vital organs to avoid hemorrhagic shock. The LifeWrap is not always effective, primarily due to variability in how much pressure is applied to patients. Our team developed a device that can interface with the LifeWrap to monitor the pressure applied to the patient’s uterus over time.

2012 Noninvasive measuring of jugular vein pressure
Connor Landgraf, Sneha Thatipelli, Sachin Rangarajan, Zhuchen Xu
Measuring jugular venous pressure (JVP) is an indirect screening tool for the presence of heart disease, but the effectiveness of the current measurement technique varies from user to user. The pressure read by this device outputs a clear signal to a display that can be read unambiguously by the user.
2012 Enabling a Laparoscopic Imaging Device to Overcome the Need for Continual Clean Up
Nasim Barzanian, Neil Ray, Sakthivel Nagaraj, Jeffrey Yang
Our device uses a continuously rotating sphere on the end of the laparoscope camera to continuously clean debris and provide unobstructed images, without interfering with surgery.
2012 Imaging of mouse model retinas
Robert Chen, Shayan Fakurnejad, Ha Sung (Leo) Moon, Kimberly Chan
our team developed a restraint system for high resolution movement of a scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) about the fixed point of a mouse retina, a telescoping lens attachment, and a laser alignment system to adapt an SLO for use with mice
2012 Design-Based Reduction of Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infection
Supada Sritanyaratana, Kenneth Gao, Albert Lin, Homayun Mehrabani
Protection of catheters from bacterial biofilms can reduce the occurrence of catheter-related bloodstream infections. Our team decided to pursue an electrified catheter concept to inhibit biofilm formation due to the presence of electric fields in the catheter.
2013 Prevention of Narcotics-Induced Respiratory Depression
Adrian Tabula, Brian Dick, Vinay Viswanadham, Yumi Suh
This project seeks to develop a device that allows hospital staff to monitor the respiration of patients being administered narcotic analgesics in a hospital setting.
2013 A Non-Invasive Means of Accurately Determining Oxygen Saturation of the Central Venous System
Marie Biscarrat, Nimmi Bhatt, Robert Chen, Manali Sawany
Measurement of a patient’s oxygen saturation in venous blood gas (SvO2) gives hospital staff information about the patient’s integrated oxygen consumption. This project aims to develop a minimally invasive device that can measure SvO2 in a clinical setting.
2013 Prevention of Falls among the Elderly at Home
Andrea Dickey, Noah Goldman, Robin Parrish, Geonyoung Kim
This project seeks to develop an assistive device which can more easily and conveniently be taken throughout the entirety of an individual’s home, such that they are more likely to use the device at all times, decreasing their chance of falling.
2013 Hospital Sleep Detection System for Prevention of Sleep Disruption and Delirium
Emmalyn Chen, Rachel Cheng, Ernest Lai, Peter Mains
This project aims to develop a device for monitoring patient sleeping and minimizing sleep disruptions in the hospital environment.
