Project Titles:

A BIOINFORMATICS AND/OR MOLECULAR BIOLOGY rotation project is available in the Buck Institute laboratory of Prof. Christopher Benz, MD, Director Cancer and Developmental Therapeutics Program (www.buckinstitute.org), working in collaboration with a former UCB Bioengineering graduate student and current Benz lab postdoctoral fellow , Christina Yau, PhD. The focus of all Benz lab projects is human breast cancer. Efforts in the Benz lab involve analyzing human samples and model cell culture systems that represent the two most common types of breast cancers for which targeted therapeutics exist and are under further development: those overexpressing estrogen receptor (ER) or the growth factor receptor, HER2 (ERBB2). Available bioinformatics projects are similar to those recently described by Yau et al. (Breast Cancer Research 9: R59, 2007; Breast Cancer Research, in press 2008). Emphasis is also placed on understanding the effects of aging on breast cancer incidence and biology (Benz CC. Critical Reviews in Oncology/Hematology 66: 65-74, 2008).

visits to the Buck Institute for brief orientation are available on request (Benz office: 415-209-2092).
