Research Interests

Biophotonic applications, namely, tissue spectroscopy and imaging, and therapeutic applications of lasers.

Research Summary

My research interests lie in the area of biophotonics or biomedical optics. This rapidly growing multidisciplinary research area includes tissue spectroscopy, biomedical imaging, and therapeutic applications of lasers. There are three ongoing projects in my lab that are currently funded by separate NIH research grants. The first project involves near-IR imaging of tooth structure for the early detection of dental caries employing near-IR transillumination and polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography. The objective of the second project is the development of laser systems for the selective removal of dental decay and restorative materials and for the drilling/cutting of bone without peripheral thermal damage. The third project in collaboration with John Featherstone entails the thermal transformation of dental hard tissues using pulsed IR lasers with the goal of rendering them resistant to acid-dissolution. All these projects have medical/dental, engineering and physical science components that are suitable for thesis projects.
