This year, we are celebrating the 20th birthday of the Bioengineering Department: 1998-2018.
There is so much to be thankful for over the past 20 years. The department is doing great things: steadily growing, producing outstanding graduates, and accomplishing cutting-edge research.
But there’s so much more.
More we could do to train our students, to set them up for success, and to bring our innovations in to broader use. All things that take your support. Help us build on past success and make the Next 20 years of Berkeley BioE amazing!
What can your gift to BioE do?
Help us get ready for The Next 20
The Department of Bioengineering at UC Berkeley is 20 years old in 2018!
We celebrate our birthday as a milestone in the maturity of this new discipline, and the perfect time to gear up and lay the foundations for our next phase of growth and impact.
It’s easy to donate online, right now! And, for the 4 weeks of the campaign, we’ll be rewarding donors with some

Gifts to the Friends of Bioengineering fund provide a pool of money to be used at the Chair’s discretion for top priority projects. These funds are not used to pay salaries of faculty or staff. Friends donations have been used for things like sending students to conferences, funding summer research, hosting seminar speakers, putting on events, and updating teaching lab equipment.
1998 wasn’t the beginning of bioengineering at Berkeley, just the official start of the Bioengineering Department. Pioneering students received undergraduate degrees in bioengineering through the engineering science program from the 1960s, and PhDs through the UC Berkeley – UCSF Graduate Program in Bioengineering since 1983. Thank you to every supporter and alumnus who has made Berkeley BioE the place it is.
