March 2012 –
UC Berkeley Bioengineering Ph.D. and B.S. alumnus Dino Di Carlo, now a bioengineering assistant professor at UCLA, has won the prestigious Young Investigator Award from the Office of the Navy.
His research explores reusable microfluidic particle filters that can be used to clean blood or seawater by selectively catching particles of certain sizes.
The Young Investigator Award offers a $170,000 in annual research grants for three consecutive years.
Di Carlo’s research may find a way to create “filterless filters” for particle accumulation in fluids that can be used for a range of applications from seawater filtration to blood purification. The Navy hopes that through this research they can eventually find a way to eliminate the burden and cost of constant filter replacement.
Di Carlo was one of 21 scientists, out of 270 applicants, who received the award.
