Under-20-Seconds Video Challenge, by BioE students

1st place winner:

Fletcher Lab DAN(ce) Paper – group project submitted by Eva Schmid

Last spring, seven Ph.D. students, one UC Berkeley staff member, and an unexpected toddler performed the first-ever choreographed dance piece — appropriately named DAN(ce) Paper, in honor of our chair — for Professor Dan Fletcher’s annual art show. We originally intended it to physical represent a biological process, but instead organized it like the elements of a science paper, with different sections called the Title, Abstract, Materials/Methods, Results, Reviewer’s Comments, and Acknowledgments. 
 
In Abstract, for example, the dancers created an ever-changing tableaux of shapes until they landed on a unified group shape, much like how a researcher writes and rewrites the abstract until they’ve landed on a succinct summary of their research. In Materials and Methods (shown in the video), the dancers wore lab coats and created a human machine, repeating sounds and gestures and manipulating the speed, to emulate a lab environment. And in Results, we moved through several movement phases to show different ways molecules interact, such as responding to an impulse, mirroring one another, or moving in unison in groups.

Members of the Biomedical Engineering Society bond together by undertaking the Fenton’s Ice Cream Challenge, where they attempt to eat 3 pounds of ice cream in under 15 minutes, by Elizabeth Wang.

 

Heart-on-a-chip Technology, Healy Lab
As the tissue beats in this tiny microfluidic device (~1mm long!), it blinks like a traffic light due to a genetically engineered reporter in the cells comprising the tissue, allowing for us to make electrophysiology measurements. The device holds promise for drug-screening and patient-specific disease modeling.
