Whether it is listening to his many interesting stories, or hearing about his rowing experiences, taking a class taught by Dr. Budinger, (BioE 100 – Ethics in Science and Engineering) is said to be one of the most intellectually-stimulating experiences the Department of Bioengineering and perhaps for that matter Cal has to offer. Dr. Budinger is able to illuminate any topic of discussion with a personal story of his own experience in the field. By the end of the semester his students are not only filled with an incredible reserve of knowledge, they have also been inspired to direct that knowledge toward procurring positive change.
For all these reasons and more, the news that Dr. Budinger will be stepping down as chair after six successful years at the end of June has been a sad one. But, Dr. B (as he is known throughout the department) is not going too far away…he will continue his many appointments with Bioengineering, EECS, LBL & UCSF to name a few. He will continue to teach his ethics class which he enjoys very much and his students do too.
It’s with much appreciation and on behalf of the department staff, I would like to say thank you to Dr. Budinger for all his hard work in the department. Dr. Budinger is one of the reasons the department has done so well during it’s first four years! As many of you know, he’s a very energetic, multi-talented man who devoted many hours and time to make this a great place to work, study, and get educated! We’ll miss you Dr. B!
Dr. Budinger’s successor is Prof. Dorian Liepmann. Prof. Liepmann has been one of our star faculty since the first class was taught in Fall 99, and it was taught by him – BioE 24. Welcome Prof. Liepmann!
