Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering Professor Jay Keasling was featured in the November/December issue of California, the UC Berkeley alumni association magazine.
The article describes Keasling’s quest to cheaply synthesize Artemisinin, an effective anti-malarial drug which is largely unavailable in the developing world due to cost. Keasling is using the methods of synthetic biology to engineering yeast and e.coli to produce the drug at a fraction of the usual cost.
