August 2003
It’s with great sadness that we say goodbye to one of our bioengineering family member Professor Werner Goldsmith. Goldsmith, Professor of the Graduate School-Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Professor of the Graduate School-Department of Bioengineering and recently Professor Emeritus Appointment in Bioengineering died Saturday, August 23, 2003 of complications from leukemia.
Goldsmith has received myriad honors and awards. In 1994, in honor of his 70th birthday, an entire issue of the International Journal of Impact Engineering was devoted to his work. In 1996, he received the prestigious Berkeley Citation. And that same year, UCLA held a three-day summer symposium in his honor. In 1997, Goldsmith became an honorary member in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers International.
He is survived by his wife Penelope, daughters Andrea and Remy Margarethe, son Stephen, and four grandchildren. Donations in his memory may be made to the Berkeley Engineering Annual Fund or the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project, P.O. Box 1597, Burlingame, CA 94011-1597.
