Bioengineering undergraduate Bryan Wong and his team took third place in the “Berkeley Ventures, Berkeley Values” pitch competition, a recent contest by the Berkeley Startup Cluster focused on ideas to support diversity, equity, and inclusion. Wong pitched Belli Meats, aiming to boost the popularity of faux meats in other cultures with their plant-based pork belly, a product that mimics the real thing with defined layers and distinct meat and fat sections.
Leyla Kabuli, EECS and Music major, has been awarded the 2021 University Medal, Berkeley’s highest honor for a graduating senior. In addition to her many other pursuits, Leyla has been a researcher in Professor Steven Conolly’s lab for the past three years, working on magnetic particle imaging.

Despite physical separation, our students and faculty are finding new ways to pursue collaboration, team projects, and hands-on education. Our BioE 192 Senior Capstone Design course is one of the innovative efforts featured for their ability to pivot to remote learning.
Four bioengineering undergraduates spent the summer working online to increase PPE compliance in universities as part of the first ever Biomedical Engineering Virtual Summer Internship hosted through the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University. BioE undergrad Anthony Tan and his GroTech@Berkeley team have won the collegiate Phase I of NASA’s Growing Beyond Earth maker challenge, and will now advance to the Phase II competition. The contest challenges teams to design a plant growth chamber for the International Space Station. Check out their SeedShuttle!
