Research in Bioengineering Professor Song Li’s lab on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) may provide an alternative to embryonic stem cell research. The research is now the top 5 most downloaded paper in Biomaterials Journal.
Dr. Aijun Wang, former Li Lab postdoc and now Assistant Professor at UC Davis Medical School, posits that induced pluripotent stem cells can be used for neural tissue engineering, which promotes nerve regeneration to damaged cells. Using these types of stem cells bypasses any controversy surrounding embryonic research and also overcomes issues of immune rejection to the stem cells.
